Feathers and Friends

tirsdag 26. september 2023
af Joseph Stephan

The day started as usual, with Anton L. opening the mist nets, while Louis, Anton M., Johan, and I got ready for the daily morning observation.

Right from the start, the Meadow Pipits (Engpiber) started to show up in continuously decent numbers, which left us excited for the following hours. The wader and duck migration were quite slow, but the fast passerine migration made up for it. We counted a total of 1162 Siskins (Grönsisken) and 5692 Meadow Pipits (Engpiber), to mention the most frequent ones. Additionally, I personally was very happy to see some raptors again, even though it was “only” 15 Sparrowhawks (Spurvehøg), 4 Kestrels (Tårnfalk), and a Peregrine Falcon (Vandrefalk). You can see a comprehensive list of all observations here.

Anton managed to catch a total of 29 birds, including a Sparrowhawk (Spurvehøg) and a Great Spotted Woodpecker (Stor Flagspætte).

Later in the day, Louis, Johan and both Antons spotted a Greenish Warbler (Lundsanger), a Yellow-Browed Warbler (Hvidbrynet løvsanger) and a Little Bunting (Dvaergvaerling) in the bog, while I was asleep, dreaming of catching a Eurasian Jay in the mist nets.

To cap off this beautiful day at the Fuglestation, Louis prepared a delicious Pasta Carbonara, which all of us savored with every bite. We enjoyed each other’s company, had some hearty laughs, and went to our well-deserved beds in hopes of catching a Little Bunting (Dvaergvaerling) tomorrow.
