Kraftigt regnvejr over det vestjyske
Morgen observation:
Hurtigt.

With heavy rains and storms, it was really cozy to sleep in this morning, hearing the roar of the wind and the waves sounding almost like the Atlantic. I got up in the morning, hoping to start the ringing as soon as the rain stopped but instead it just kept building more and more and it wasn’t before 1 pm that we could finally get to work. That, of course, is the worst time of the day to try to catch birds under normal circumstances, but just after a very windy and rainy morning we thought that maybe birds needed to feed as soon as the weather improved so we tried our luck, nonetheless. We opened all the nets but soon found out that there were lots of birds moving in the dunes but none in the station garden so we closed the nets there, seeing that there was no standard ringing anyway.
This meant we had to chill up at the lighthouse, enjoying the sun with our books, and check the nets every half hour to take out the various whitethroats. There weren’t all that many birds we could catch but at least we seem to have caught a new family of common whitethroats (an old female and 3 juveniles). Probably they are from the area, if the female belongs with the juveniles. No migration yet. But this night looks very good for migration to finally start – although it is currently much warmer in Norway than it is here, so maybe the birds just decide to stay there for now…
